Calvia Town Hall has unveiled an ambitious plan to revitalise the Magaluf promenade, aiming to transform its reputation and improve the area for both residents and tourists.
The renovation, initially projected to take 14 months, is now expected to be completed within seven months, from October 2024 to May 2025.
With a budget of €3.9 million (£3.3 million) funded by European resources and the Agency for Tourism Strategy of the Balearic Islands (AETIB), the project will remodel a 650-meter stretch of the promenade.
This phase of the makeover will extend from Nikki Beach to the iconic square housing the popular Blackbeards Beach Bar and Ocean’s Beach Club.
The renovation includes comprehensive infrastructure upgrades such as new lighting, improved sewage systems, enhanced rainwater management with a collection tank for irrigation, and modernised drinking water networks.
Additionally, the promenade will see the installation of new street furniture to enhance its aesthetic appeal and functionality.
In an effort to blend natural beauty with modern design, the project will involve the partial relocation of existing palm trees and the introduction of new ones.
These will be arranged to create small oasis areas rather than the current linear layout. Artificial dunes will also be created on the beach, anchored by Mediterranean riverside shrubs to ensure their stability.
To honour Gabriel Escarrer Juliá, the founder of Meliá Hotels International, the promenade will be renamed after him. This renaming is a tribute to his substantial contributions to the region’s tourism and hospitality industry, recognising his pivotal role in Magalluf’s development and prominence in the global travel sector.
The transformation of Magalluf’s promenade represents a significant step in the town’s efforts to shed its image as a hotspot for drunken tourists and become a more attractive destination for a diverse range of visitors.
