Mass shooting at Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade: One dead and nine injured | US | News

Police Chief Stacey Graves told reporters that one person is dead and 10 to 15 people are injured, but the exact number of the gunshot victims remains to be unclear.

Two people were taken into custody, Graves said, adding that “because of bad actors, this tragedy occurred, even in the presence of uniformed officers,” during a press conference.

When asked whether there were children among the injured, Graves responded that she “does not believe” any of them were.

The Kansas City Police Department is working to release fans from inside the Union Station and “expedite” care of the injured.

“We need people to exit the area as quickly and safely as possible and [to] avoid the parking garage in order to facilitate treatment of shooting victims,” the police department added.

Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly said on social media that she was among those evacuated from the rally site.

She wrote on X: “I have been evacuated and am out of harm’s way. I encourage everyone to follow instructions and updates from @kcpolice. Please stay safe.”

Missouri Gov. Mike said he and the first lady were at the parade when shots were fired but are safe, Parson said on X.

He said: State law enforcement personnel are assisting local authorities in response efforts. As we wait to learn more, our hearts go out to the victims.”

The joyous day for Kansas City fans started Wednesday afternoon as hundreds of thousands were expected in downtown to celebrate their team’s victory at the Super Bowl.

The one and a half hour victory parade began at 11am local time (12pm EST) on Wednesday at 6th Street and Grand Boulevard, before heading south on Grand West. After heading north on Main, it came to an end at Union Station.

The rally then followed from 12.45pm in front of Union Station and the National World War One Museum and Memorial north lawn.

Several players, including quarterback Patrick Mahomes II, linebacker Drue Tranquill, and safety Justin Reid, offered their condolences to the victims on social media.

Tranquill said on X: “Please join me in prayer for all the victims in this heinous act. Pray that doctors & first responders would have steady hands & that all would experience full healing.”

The Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl on Sunday, – their third title in five years. They became the first team in 20 years to win back-to-back NFL championships after a tense 25-22 finish against the San Francisco 69-ers.
