Finland shooting latest: Child dead, two seriously injured after pupil, 12, opens fire | World | News

A child has been arrested following a school shooting in Finland, which killed a pupil and seriously injured two more, police said.

A police statement read: “One person has died in the shooting incident and two people are currently hospitalised. The victims’ relatives have been informed about the incident.”

The three young casualties were attending Viertola Elementary School in Vantaa, a city 10 miles north of Helsinki. The school grounds were stormed around 9am local time (7am GMT), following reports a person had opened fire.

The school was placed on lockdown during the police operation, with members of the public urged to avoid the area. Pictures show armed officers and several police vehicles surrounding the school gates.

The suspect had managed to run away from the school following the shooting but was eventually detained “in a calm manner” on the other side of a local river and had the firearm taken away.
