Casemiro ‘forgets offside rule’ to gift Arsenal goal against Man Utd | Football | Sport

Casemiro appeared to forget the offside rule in the build-up to Arsenal‘s opening goal against Manchester United. The midfielder-turn-defender was seen casually jogging out from the back, allowing Kai Havertz to stay onside.

The goal had come against the run of play, with United starting well in the Old Trafford sunshine. Rasmus Hojlund spurned the hosts’ best chance of the early period, but it was Leandro Trossard who broke the deadlock 20 minutes in, sweeping home Havertz’s drilled cross into the penalty area.

Had Casemiro been more alert to the danger, the goal would’ve likely been ruled out for an offside offence, but such was the Brazilian’s sleepy response, Havertz was able to gain space on the United backline. And by the time any Red Devils’ covering defenders arrived on the scene, the damage had already been done.

It sparked a passionate response from Sky Sports co-commentator Gary Neville, who was quick to berate the former Real Madrid man’s defending. He said: “Casemiro has taken some criticism in recent weeks and he’s going to get a little bit more.

“He goes to split wide, once Onana plays it, he has to get up. He has to get quicker than that. Once he doesn’t, he’s in trouble. Trossard does what every good forward does.”

Another defensive howler was the last thing Casemiro needed after a horror week in a United shirt. The 32-year-old was at fault for several Crystal Palace goals during the three-time European champions’ 4-0 mauling in south London, leading to speculation about his future at Old Trafford.
