Benni McCarthy lifts lid on Jadon Sancho Man Utd row and why winger never apologised | Football | Sport

Manchester United first-team coach Benni McCarthy has spoken out about Jadon Sancho’s feud with Erik ten Hag, and why he believes that the winger opted against apologising to his manager.

Sancho was left unhappy by comments made by the Dutchman earlier this season when it was claimed that his performances in training were not meeting the required ‘level’ for the Red Devils.

The England international hit back at Ten Hag on X, otherwise known as Twitter, claiming that he had been scapegoated. Sancho then refused to apologise for his outburst, which saw him frozen out of the United squad before being sent out on loan to Borussia Dortmund.

The winger shone upon his return to the Signal Iduna Park and a permanent move is therefore on the cards this summer, though it remains to be seen whether he is offered another chance in the Premier League if United part ways with Ten Hag this summer.

McCarthy has now spoken out about why he believes Sancho opted against repairing his relationship with Ten Hag by apologising, telling 947: “I spoke to the manager and I said to him that you know the delicacy.

“I told him I think Jadon feels that if he apologises then he’s going to be classed as someone who doesn’t train hard, that doesn’t work hard and that everything that was said against him was true.

“If you are from the streets, no one wants to apologise because then you’re admitting you are not training well, you are lazy, everything you are accused of. Jadon wasn’t going to have that. The manager just said that all he wants is an apology.

“I spoke to Jadon as a coach, as a mentor, as a friend, and as someone who grew up on the streets and knows the code. But Jadon just wasn’t seeing it.
