Xi ramps up Taiwan dispute as he warns ‘nobody can stop family reunion’ with island | World | News
“Chinese on both sides of the strait absolutely have enough wisdom to handle all disputes peacefully and avoid heading into conflict.”
But Taipei hit back at Ma’s comments, with the national China-policy-making Mainland Affairs Council saying it regretted Ma failing to convey Taiwans’ commitment to protecting its sovereignty from a Chinese attack.
The Council also urged Beijing to stop its intimidating campaign and return to a diplomatic approach to resolve tensions between China and the island.
Taiwan has long rejected China’s territorial claims over the island and most of its political community has insisted only the Taiwanese people can decide the future of the island.
Xi has been clear for years that his government wishes to reclaim control over the island, and he has warned the United States to turn “Biden’s commitment of not supporting ‘Taiwan independence’” into a concrete pledge.
