WW3 fears soar as Rishi Sunak pledges troops to Poland with Eurofighter Typhoon on patrol | Politics | News
Rishi Sunak is pledging a chunk of Britain’s Armed Forces to Poland, with a Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft deployed to patrol its airspace. The agreement, detailed in news outlet Interia, was concluded between the Prime Minister and his Polish counterpart Donald Tusk.
At a news conference at the Polish Prime Minister’s chancellery, Mr Sunak declared there was a great bond between the two countries.
He added that Poland and Britain would be forever allies and recalled the heroic exploits of Polish pilots fighting with the UK during World War 2.
“We will strengthen our co-operation in all formats. Typhoon fighters will patrol Polish airspace. We will also send 16,000 soldiers in support,” he said.
“Poland is at the heart of ensuring security throughout Europe.”
The British Prime Minister said the two countries were exploring possibilities to co-operate in arms production.
Mr Tusk said the two premiers wanted to help create a co-ordinated security policy that will cover all of Europe and the UK.
“It’s time to end the period of competition and competition between various initiatives for the defence of Europe,” he said. “Now we need readiness and commitment. The Polish-British agenda is long and broad.”
The UK also pledged this week an additional £500million to Kyiv on top of the £2.5billion allocated for this financial year.
Mr Sunak wants to emphasise the UK’s role in defending Ukraine, as well as its NATO allies.
Mr Sunak heads next to Berlin to meet the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Wednesday, as he seeks to build closer ties with Europe’s leaders.
