Wimbledon and BBC chiefs row over Andy Murray with ‘high-level meeting | Tennis | Sport

Wimbledon and BBC bosses will reportedly meet for high-level talks on Wednesday to try and find a compromise to broadcast Andy Murray‘s farewell. The Brit is set to feature in the doubles draw alongside brother Jamie.

Murray confirmed that this year will be his final Wimbledon and he pulled out of the singles draw because he did not recover from back surgery in time.

The Brit is in a race to be fit for the doubles and first-round matches take place between Wednesday and Friday.

That gives Wimbledon chiefs flexibility on when they want their two-time singles champion to feature.

However, the BBC are consulted over the schedule because they are the prime broadcasting partner.

The Telegraph report that the BBC would prefer Murray to play on Thursday so it does not clash with their Friday broadcast of Portugal vs France at Euro 2024, which is due to start at 7pm.

However, Wimbledon bosses are keen to give Murray an extra day off to give him the best chance of progressing to round two.

If the Murray brothers lose it will be Andy’s final appearance at the All England Club.

All England Club chief executive Sally Bolton said: “The doubles first-round matches we can schedule any day between Wednesday and Friday.

“Scheduling is an art, not a science. There are always loads of moving parts. And Andy’s doubles with his brother – he’s just one of those moving parts.”

Speaking ahead of the tournament, All England Club chair Debbie Jevans explained who was in charge.

She said: “We’ll focus on the schedule that is right for Wimbledon, for tennis and the players.

“The BBC rightly gets an input and can give an opinion, but ultimately it’s a tennis decision. We always prioritise the athletes and their health.”
