Tyson Fury back in gym with Oleksandr Usyk warning days after being escorted from pub | Boxing | Sport
There were fears that Fury’s rematch with Usyk could be in doubt after fans became concerned with Fury’s behaviour after he was escorted out of a bar in Morecambe last week. But the 35-year-old has quashed those concerns after footage was posted on social media of him back in the gym.
Usyk beat Fury by split decision in Saudi Arabia on May 18 to become the first undisputed heavyweight world champion since Lennox Lewis. Inevitably, the rematch clause in Fury’s contract was triggered and the date is set for December 21 back in Saudi Arabia.
Fury shut down claims he could pull out of the fight by uploading a video of him working out on the punchbag with the following caption: “On December 21st in Riyadh, in the heart of the kingdom, the king will reclaim his throne and become undisputed.
“Usyk, I’m coming for you! Get ready for the Gypsy King! The path to redemption is all mine. I know what I have to do, I saw my shortcomings and best believe I am inevitable.”
During the video, Fury took a break from the punchbag and sent a stark, out-of-breath, message to the Ukrainian, he said: “Hey guys, Tyson Fury here. I am back in the gym as you can see, counting down the days until I can get my redemption on Usyk.
“December 21st is going to be my time. I’ve done everything in boxing but I ain’t come back from a loss. I relish it, the chance to come back and redeem myself. GET UP! December 21st is all me – undisputed, here we come.”
Usyk’s promoter Alex Krassyuk was quick to react to Fury’s post, as he mocked him infamously being escorted out of Nowhere bar last week, he was filmed falling to his knees outside before headbutting the pavement. Krassyuk poked fun at the incident, commenting: “Bro, let’s have a beer”.
The rematch has also been announced for December but it’s unclear yet whether the undisputed title will be on the line again. The IBF are considering a request from Usyk to retain the belt after they previously announced before the Fury fight they intended to strip the champion if they didn’t immediately fight their mandatory challenger.
