Tricky homework question for 8-year-olds stumps adults | Weird | News

Parents across the globe have been left baffled by a seriously difficult homework question.

The tricky brain teaser was shared on Facebook, proving that even brainy grown-ups can be flummoxed. It came to wide attention after a perplexed mum uploaded an image of her son’s puzzling assignment online, asking for help from other users as they were “stuck”.

The teaser sparked widespread bemusement among numerous parents, as the tricky schoolwork involved unscrambling letters to form two Y3/Y4 spelling words.

The instructions provided were: “Mr Whoops has accidentally jumbled up two Y3/Y4 spelling words. All the letters from the two word are muddled together. Can you help him to unjumble them? (Clue: They’re both nouns!)”

Arranged in a confusing sequence, the letters up for solution spelled out: brrryiltfuia.

The cryptic challenge has been stumping parents far and wide, leaving many wondering just where to begin in solving such an enigmatic puzzle. Bewildered commenters confessed resorting to internet aids, such as Google, to uncover the elusive words.

It’s seems as though some will do anything to gain a leg-up in resolving the puzzle. Contributors to the debate offered various insights, with one noting: “I used Google Lense.”

Another participant proffered a guess, saying: “Library and fruit.” In the mix of replies, yet another revealed: “I got fruit, but couldn’t make out the second word.”

Meanwhile, another parent staunchly decided against cheating, stating: “I wouldn’t fill it in. I couldn’t do that myself, so when asked why it’s not filled in, I’d tell him to say he doesn’t know the answer.”

It appears the correct answers are indeed fruit and library, though many were left scratching their heads initially. It seems adults aren’t quite as sharp with language as we might think.

This isn’t the first instance of parents being baffled by their kids school assignments. Just earlier this month, a mum took to social media to express her bewilderment at a maths problem from her child’s schoolwork that seemed impossible to crack.

The conundrum was posted in the Facebook group Breastfeeding Mama Talk, by Angie Werner, who admitted that her daughter Ayla’s latest maths challenge had them all perplexed. She posted: “OK, we’re all stumped, this is my second-grader’s homework – HELP!”

The tricky maths question was: “There are 49 dogs signed up to compete in the dog show. There are 36 more small dogs than large dogs signed up to compete. How many small dogs are signed up to compete?”
