Three garden tasks to do now to protect plants from frost
It’s a well-known fact that Brits have a deep affection for their gardens.
These green spaces not only add a splash of colour to our homes, but also serve as the perfect backdrop for those sunny summer days when all you want to do is lounge outdoors. However, maintaining their beauty during the colder months can prove challenging.
The damp and chilly weather can take a toll on our plants, leaving them looking rather worse for wear. But don’t despair, as a gardening expert has shared a straightforward method to safeguard your plants during the winter season.
To combat the frost, Laura, who goes by @wkndgardener on TikTok, suggests one simple solution – invest in handy covers. If you have any delicate plants that require protection, she assures that this easy trick will shield them from any potential winter freezes.
In an honest video, Laura outlines three simple steps to success. The best part is it’s really easy to pull off.
The three steps are:
- Mulch around the base of the plant
- Wrap the plant with a frost cloth
- Pin the cloth securely to the ground to promise protection
After completing these easy tasks, all that’s left is to keep your fingers crossed. However, some protection is always better than none.
The idea was well-received, with many gardening enthusiasts already using them. You can purchase lengths of the cloth from B&Q for as little as £9.99.
As for their effectiveness, they can indeed protect frost-sensitive plants from the cold when used correctly, even during severe temperature drops.
The cloths can also remain on the plants for an extended period without causing any harm. For optimal results, ensure the cloth touches the ground around all edges.
Bricks or pavers can be used to secure the cloth, but it’s crucial to ensure that the material doesn’t come into direct contact with your plants. It’s important to maintain a gap between them.
