Ryder Cup Friday tee times as Europe pick heavyweight pairings | Golf | Sport

The Ryder Cup returns today as the 45th edition of the competition takes place at the Bethpage Black in New York. Team Europe head into the contest this weekend looking to retain their crown after winning two years ago in Italy.

However, no team has managed to win the Ryder Cup on opposition soil since 2012 and the famous ‘Miracle at Medinah’. At the opening ceremony on Wednesday, Team Europe captain Luke Donald gave a heartening speech to rouse his men ahead of the action.

“[The Ryder Cup] is not about prize money or ranking points,” he explained. “It’s about pride, it’s about representing your flag, your shirt and the legacy you leave behind.

“We are fuelled by something money can’t buy – purpose, brotherhood and a responsibility to honour those who came before us, while inspiring those whose time is yet to come.” The competition will take place over Friday, Saturday and Sunday with the opening two days dedicated to the four fourball matches and four foursomes played in the morning and afternoon.

On Sunday, 12 single matches will be played with every member of the team taking part. On Friday and Saturday, the captains do not have to select every member of their squad if they do not wish to.

On Thursday, both teams announced their pairings for the foursomes which shall kickstart the Ryder Cup. The Express has taken a look at who is playing and when on the opening morning.
