Rare 50p coin with King Charles III worth loads – but there’s a catch

Rare coins can fetch a fortune, whether it’s the ultra-rare Kew Gardens or penny worth thousands.

We all know the standard Kew Gardens 50p coin is highly desirable among collectors. And nowadays if you find a gold version, it’s £7,000 in your pockets.

Now on TikTok, user @CoinCollectingWizard, who has 196,100 followers, discussed the Atlantic Salmon 50p which apparently has 500,000 in circulation, according to Coin Hunter.

It features King Charles III on the back after it was minted in 2023. But apparently it can be hard finding the coin in your collection, although you shouldn’t give up.

The TikTok sensation claimed: “This 50p is selling for crazy money, you can find it in your change. There are rumours the Atlantic Salmon 50p that only recently entered circulation could have a low mintage of only 500,000 coins.”

He added: “This would make it the second rarest circulating 50p that can be found in your change. The rarest 50p as we all know is the elusive Kew Gardens, which has a mintage of 210,000.

“So you can imagine if this Salmon 50p does end up being as low as 500,000, it will be highly-sought after by coin collectors.”

But don’t get too excited just yet, as the TikTok user later clarified it’s “only a rumour at this stage”. He concluded: “No one knows how many are out there or how many more are due to be seen.”

Speculation surrounding the coin’s value began when collectors noticed a 50p coin recently introduced into circulation seemed particularly scarce.

As a result, its value has skyrocketed on online marketplaces like eBay and in coin collector communities, making it a highly sought-after find.

The post revealing the coin’s details quickly gained traction, garnering hundreds of likes and numerous comments from enthusiasts. One commenter exclaimed: “Crazy money *flames emoji*.”

Another proudly shared: “I have one.” A third participant eagerly chimed in: “I’m still looking for one.”
