People are only just realising function of cap on your kitchen sink
The often-ignored cap on standard kitchen sinks has left many homeowners stunned after they learned its function.
Normally situated between the draining board and basin, the round cap – around 6cm in diameter – can serve a very useful purpose. After discovering its use herself, TikTok user and DIY enthusiast Shauna O’Connor created a video to educate others.
“Apparently lots of you didn’t know about this sink hack,” she began in her clip. “I’m replacing my dish soap dispenser as it’s three-years-old and pretty battered and leaking, and while I was doing so I realised that many didn’t know that if you have this cap on your sink you can remove it.”
Shauna recorded footage from within the cupboard under her sink, revealing a soap dispenser in situ. After removing her cap, she continued: “You can fill it [the hole where cap was] with a dispenser.”
Highlighting an example for sale on Amazon priced at £8.99, Shauna concluded: “Once you get it, just pop the cap off and then it’s really easy to install and it’s quite affordable, I think mine lasted three years.”
Screwing her new dispenser in, Shauna pushed the lever to apply soap to her cloth, as she hailed: “I’m really loving this cool hack. It’s so handy.”
She also enthused in a caption: “And it’s one less thing cluttering the counter top! Don’t keep this secret to yourself, share with a friend.”
Since sharing her video, a staggering 3.7 million TikTok users have taken note of the advice, one of whom penned in response: “I just checked, I have that that cap on my sink. I’m going to get one of these, thanks for this. I have learned so much watching TikTok.”
A second admitted: “Wow I had no idea, thank you.” Whilst a third confessed: “So that’s what is on my sink. I have been wondering for years.”
Other TikTok users contributed with added advice, with one person recommending: “Before you buy, check the space under the sink. Sometimes the cupboard frame is in the way.”
And another helpfully contributed to the discussion, adding: “Instead of the tiny refillable bottle, you can get a hose that goes direct from the sink pump into a large bottle of dish soap in the bottom of the cabinet. It’s way easier than trying to detach and refill that tiny little bottle.”
Elsewhere, meanwhile, some contested the cap’s true function. “The hole is for the faucet/tap in case the wash should be installed the other way,” one TikTok user explained. And a second individual agreed: “It’s actually for a tap/faucet in case the sink goes the other way. The dispenser retrofits. If it was for that it wouldn’t be in that position.”
