Paul and Tyson to receive boxing suspensions after Netflix bout | Boxing | Sport

Mike Tyson and Jake Paul are facing mandatory suspensions from boxing following their eight-round bout on Friday night at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, where Paul emerged victorious by decision.

Such suspensions are standard practice in combat sports to protect fighters, especially after a knockout.

The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, which managed the Tyson vs Paul event, has imposed a no-spar ban to ensure both athletes have adequate time to recover from any fight-related injuries.

Although the exact duration of the rest period is not yet determined, it will be at least seven days.

A technical knockout would have resulted in a minimum 30-day suspension, while a knockout would have led to a 60-day suspension.

“Medical disqualification of a contestant is for their own safety and may be made at the recommendation of the examining physician or TDLR,” the regulator stated.

Paul said after his victory: “Mike Tyson, he’s a legend. He’s the greatest to ever do it. I look up to him and we wouldn’t be here today without him.

“This man is an icon and it’s an honour to fight him. It was tough like I expected it to be.”

While Tyson reacted: “I didn’t prove nothing to anybody, only to myself. I’ve been through so many ups and downs since my last fight with Kevin McBride (in 2005).

“I’ve been in rehab. I’ve been in prison, been locked up. Never in a million years did I believe I’d be doing this.”

Meanwhile, viewers experienced streaming issues during the Netflix-aired event, particularly when Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor were delivering a memorable fight.

That led to complaints on social media about being unable to watch the entire match.

Taylor just managed to scrape a win over Serrano with three judges scoring it 95-94, defending her undisputed lightweight championship belts amidst controversy as Serrano labelled the decision “shady”.

The evening also saw Mario Barrios and Abel Ramos ending in a draw after a fierce battle, despite Barrios risking his WBC welterweight title.

In addition, Bruce Carrington furthered his unbeaten streak by cruising past Dana Coolwell, Lucas Bahdi remained undefeated against Amando Casamonica, and Shadashia Green secured a points victory over Melinda Watpool after ten rounds.

Meanwhile, Neeraj Goyat clinched a victory through decision against Whindersson Nunes.
