Michael van Gerwen health update after missing Premier League Darts night | Other | Sport
Michael van Gerwen is already plotting a comeback to competition just days following his health scare. The Dutchman was forced to pull out of last week’s Premier League Darts evening in Glasgow owing to illness. A PDC statement read at the time: “Michael van Gerwen has withdrawn from Thursday’s BetMGM Premier League action in Glasgow due to illness.
“The seven-time Premier League champion has been ruled out of night three at the OVO Hydro tonight due to a medical issue.” And with the Premier League resuming this week, the seven-time champion has confirmed he will be participating in Belfast after his recovery.
Speaking to AD.nl, Van Gerwen said: “I’m feeling much better, but I was really poorly. I’ll be there on Thursday. Tomorrow I’m flying to Northern Ireland. I’m not completely fit yet, but fit enough.”
Van Gerwen’s friend Vincent van der Voort revealed details about the darts star’s condition and indicated that his illness was more severe than initially believed.

Speaking on Dutch podcast Darts Draait Door, he said: “It’s really not going well at the moment. It’s not that he’s unwilling to play darts. I’ve read the reactions too. He’s supposedly afraid of Luke Littler or a hangover from carnival. Things like that.
“They don’t even know what exactly is wrong with him. All sorts of tests have been done, but nothing has come of it. He’s seriously ill. He’s having trouble eating because the glands in his throat are swollen.”
“He was also sick to death of having to cancel the Pro Tours again. He started the year well and was building up and working towards something. Now you’re at a standstill and you’re thrown back. That’s incredibly frustrating.”
Van Gerwen is in a strong position to potentially claim his place in the Premier League finals. He occupies second position in the standings following three nights, having won in Newcastle.
In total, he has secured five victories and reached the final in Antwerp. Van Gerwen has not captured the Premier League title since 2023.
He advanced to the semi-finals the following year, whilst he could only manage fifth place in the 2025 edition of the competition.
The Dutchman faces Gerwyn Price in the quarter-finals in Belfast on Thursday evening. Premier League champion Luke Humphries remains winless after the opening three nights and meets Jonny Clayton in Belfast.
