Matrix fans beg ‘let it just die’ as Warner Bros announces fifth installment | Films | Entertainment

Matrix fanatics have called for the franchise to “just die” as yet another installment is set to hit the big screen.

The epic action sci-fi movie first came to life 25 years ago when Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss became the iconic Neo and Trinity in the 1999 film, alongside Laurence Fishburne.

Since then, there have been three more sequels with the latest dropping in 2021, The Matrix Resurrections, with some new faces in Priyanka Chopra and Neil Patrick Harris.

As of yet, no further details have been released regarding the fifth Matrix film, including its basic plot or if Keanu will be back to reprise his role as Neo.

But while the movies have a loyal fanbase, many have taken to social media to express their dismay at the franchise’s expansion.

Taking to Reddit, one user commented: “As the three Matrix sequels have proven, you can’t recapture the lightning in the bottle that was the first Matrix.

“Unfortunately, as long as there’s money to be made, people will still try.”

Another agreed: “‘I’m happy but actually shocked. I was certain that WB were going to park this franchise in the garage for at least a decade after The Matrix Resurrections bombed.”

Someone else said: “Nah, the last one made its point very clear. We don’t need anymore. The original 3 were more than enough.”

Whereas a fourth simply begged: “Oh my God just let it die.”

Keanu has been in all four of the movies, the original in 1999, Matrix Reloaded in 2003, Matrix Revolutions later that same year, as well as 2021’s Matrix Resurrections.

He has reportedly earned more than $156 million from his time as Neo but it hasn’t been confirmed whether or not he will be back for the fifth film.

The 59-year-old is currently in Los Angeles shooting his upcoming project Outcome.

He also has a number of other films in the works according to his IMDb profile, including Good Fortune and Ballerina which is a John Wick spin-off so he may be too busy.

This upcoming Matrix film will be the first time that neither Lana or Lilly Wachowski are going to be leading the way.

Lana will instead be an executive producer while the new director, screenwriter and producer is going to be Drew Goddard.

“It is not hyperbole to say The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life,” Drew commented.

“Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world.”
