Despite Ferguson being a known admirer of Pochettino and having previously advocated for his appointment, as well as being close friends with Ancelotti, the decision-makers at United, including CEO Omar Berrada and Director of Football Jason Wilcox, believe they can make the right choice without Ferguson’s input.

In 2024, Ratcliffe and INEOS ended Ferguson’s contract as a global ambassador for the club as part of cost-cutting measures. However, Ferguson remains a significant figure at United, where he won 38 major trophies during his 26-year tenure.

He frequently attends matches and visited the Carrington training ground to speak with senior officials just a day after Amorim was sacked. Some may perceive the decision not to consult Ferguson as a significant slight.

There’s nothing preventing Fergie from reaching out to club officials to share his views, should he wish to do so.

The move comes just hours after Roy Keane ripped into the club and accused Ferguson of «hanging around like a bad smell» with former chief David Gill.

On Sky Sports, he said: “I’m intrigued why they keep giving some people a job. What happens in the interview where they sit there and go 12 or 14 months later he’s not the guy for us.

“Did you not sus that out when you were speaking to them? You look them in the eye.

“You see who’s making the decisions at Man United. You still have Ferguson and David Gill hanging around like a bad smell.

“Who’s making the decisions? [Sir Jim] Ratcliffe? [Jason] Wilcox?”
