Manchester United have received an early boost ahead of their Monday night clash with Everton. Top-four contenders Chelsea dropped two points after conceding a late equaliser against Burnley on Saturday, presenting United with the opportunity to establish a three-point advantage over their rivals with victory at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Yet it may not prove quite so simple. Everton triumphed at Old Trafford in the earlier meeting this season despite spending over half the match a man down following Idrissa Gana Gueye’s dismissal. Circumstances have shifted dramatically for the Red Devils since then, particularly regarding the managerial situation.
Michael Carrick has replaced Ruben Amorim, with the caretaker boss maintaining an unbeaten record whilst pursuing Champions League qualification.
Should he deliver a top-four finish, it could prove crucial in shaping United’s summer recruitment strategy. That’s precisely where our attention turns as we deliver the latest developments from the red side of Manchester.
McTominay’s clause revealed
Former United midfielder Scott McTominay has flourished at Napoli following his 2024 switch to the Italian outfit. Should Antonio Conte’s team decide to cash in on their prized asset, however, his previous club stand to benefit financially.
McTominay played a crucial role in Napoli’s Scudetto triumph last season, securing their return to the Champions League. Speculation has emerged about a new contract as recognition for his impressive performances, with the Scotsman’s agent reportedly in discussions with club officials.

An enhanced deal would dismiss any speculation of a Premier League return, at least for the foreseeable future. Though the Manchester Evening News report that United would be due 10 per cent of any transfer fee should Napoli opt to sell McTominay.

McTominay’s move to Estadio Diego Armando Maradona cost Napoli slightly more than £25million. Should he depart this summer, though this appears improbable, he would likely fetch a considerably larger sum.
Trabzonspor have no intention of converting Andre Onana’s loan arrangement into a permanent transfer, according to Turkish media reports. The Cameroon goalkeeper enjoyed a promising start to the season there following his loan switch from Manchester United, though recent performances have proved more challenging.
Fatih Tekke, the Turkish side’s manager, reportedly offered Onana his personal support following a 3-2 loss to Fenerbahce. Nevertheless, the club are not thought to be making a permanent summer acquisition of the goalkeeper a priority.
The loss marked Trabzonspor’s first since the new year began and damaged their slim title aspirations. Onana retained his place for the following fixture, though, away at Gaziantep.
Onana’s United deal runs until 2028, though uncertainty remains over whether he’ll be brought back into the fold at his parent club once a permanent manager is installed. Speculation has emerged about a potential return to his former club, Inter Milan, where he reached the Champions League final in 2023 before his switch to Old Trafford.
