Man Utd issue Amad statement as Ivorian eyes Sunderland reunion | Football | Sport
Manchester United have announced that ex-Sunderland starlet Amad is set to return for this weekend’s Premier League showdown at Old Trafford. The former Black Cats loanee, who became a fan favourite during his stint at the Stadium of Light, played a pivotal role in Tony Mowbray’s dynamic side that made it to the Championship play-off semi-finals, only to be defeated by eventual promotion victors Luton Town.
Sunderland had attempted to lure Amad back to the Stadium of Light on two occasions, but the young forward had already established himself as a crucial part of United’s first-team squad following his successful spell with the Black Cats. Despite moving on, Amad maintains a strong bond with the Wearsiders and was seen supporting Regis Le Bris’ team during their Championship play-off campaign, even celebrating their promotion on social media.
Supporters were eagerly anticipating a reunion with the 23-year-old, but uncertainty arose when he missed United’s 3-1 loss to Brentford due to a family bereavement.
However, the former Sunderland player has returned to training and United issued a statement on Wednesday afternoon, stating: «After a short absence due to a family bereavement, Amad has been welcomed back into the group.
«The Ivorian winger had been involved in our opening six games of the season, starting five, but missed last weekend’s trip to Brentford, where the Reds were beaten 3-1.
«Explaining the situation prior to the loss, Ruben Amorim explained that ‘someone in his family passed away, so we are giving all the support to Amad. We understood it was important to him to have his time. We are here for him.’
«Amad is now back training and working hard to prepare for the weekend’s game, where United seek an immediate response to defeat when we welcome his former club, Sunderland, to Old Trafford. Also part of the main training group again was Tyrell Malacia.
«Noussair Mazraoui remained absent, having been ruled out until the October international break, which begins next week. As well as Amad, United will have Casemiro available for selection again, after he missed the Brentford visit through a one-game suspension.»
Sunderland head to Manchester looking to maintain their impressive start to the season with 11 points from their opening six matches.
