Lloyds and Halifax to close 44 more bank branches – full list of areas affected | Personal Finance | Finance
Lloyds Banking Group has announced 44 new branch closures, closing the door on face-to-face services in 155 branches in total by the end of 2023 and 40 in 2024.
The Bank of Scotland has announced five more branches closing (26 in total), Halifax has announced 15 more branches closing (62 in total) and Lloyds has announced 24 more branches closing (107 in total).
The branch in Plymouth is set to close on January 10, 2024. Teignmouth is planned to close on April 15, 2024, while Crediton’s bank is due to close on July 4, 2024.
Following the announcement of the closure of Lloyds – LINK also shared a new banking hub for Teignmouth as the final bank branch in town is closing down.
The town will benefit from a new banking hub as part of a wider commitment to protect access to cash.
In 2021, the banking industry agreed that following the closure of any bank branch, LINK will identify whether a community requires further cash services.
Additionally, any community without a branch can contact LINK directly and ask to be assessed for support.
A Lloyds spokesperson says: “Our customers are increasingly using digital channels to manage their money – we now have over 20 million regular digital users, so it’s important we continue to develop the online services our customers want to use.”
The news comes just a week after Virgin Money announced plans to axe 30 percent of its branch network, following a growing trend among the UK’s major banks.
Barclays has already committed to shutting down 156 branches this year, NatWest is drawing the blinds on 143 branches, and HSBC has earmarked 114 branches for closure.
As banking hubs increase, Britons are reminded of what they can do there.
Banking hubs are a shared banking space, similar to a traditional bank branch, but available to everyone. The hub will consist of a counter service operated by Post Office employees, where customers of any bank can withdraw and deposit cash, make bill payments and carry out regular banking transactions.
In addition, there will be private spaces where customers can speak to community bankers from their own bank for more complicated matters that require specialist knowledge or privacy.
The banks will be working on a rotating basis, so there will be staff from different banks available on different days.
