Liverpool ‘consider activating £70m buy-back clause’ as deadline emerges | Football | Sport

The Englishman had originally signed for former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, only for the Dutchman to be sacked just a couple of weeks into the season. However, under replacement manager Kasper Hjulmand, Leverkusen have steadied themselves and are enjoying a strong 2025/26 campaign.

So much so, they’ve qualified for the Champions League last 16, where they were drawn against competition favourites Arsenal for this month’s tie. Quansah has been a key part of Leverkusen’s revival, so much so that his performances are already attracting attention from some of Europe’s elite clubs.

Among them is Liverpool, who, according to reports from Sky Germany, are considering bringing back their former academy graduate. It comes just months after they sanctioned a deal to let Quansah join Leverkusen for £35million.

It would cost Liverpool significantly more than that to bring him back though, with the reports suggesting the buy-back in his contract is worth a whopping £70m. Liverpool are said to only have until the end of May to activate the clause, and failure to do so would allow Leverkusen to hold out for a higher price.

Quansah’s stance on a move isn’t yet known, but he did raise eyebrows with recent comments where he appeared to call out his fellow Leverkusen team-mates. Speaking to the club’s in-house media team, he said after a recent draw to Mainz: “In my opinion, it’s not good enough. We didn’t win and that’s not good enough. We’ve been saying this a lot lately: Not enough energy, not enough intensity. I just wasn’t enough again today.

“I feel like we’re playing against ourselves at the moment. We don’t play together enough and we have different ideas. We’re playing in a disorganised manner and need to regroup.“

Liverpool’s centre-back department does look as if it will be in need of some surgery this season. Ibrahima Konate is yet to sign a contract extension, despite his deal set to expire at the end of the season. Meanwhile, Joe Gomez and Virgil Van Dijk both have fewer than 18 months left on their deals.
