Liverpool confirm Alexander-Arnold repeat as transfer done | Football | Sport
Liverpool youngster Trent Kone-Doherty has completed a surprising permanent transfer to Norwegian club Molde.
The 19-year-old Kone-Doherty, whose contract was set to conclude at the season’s end, has opted to chase the opportunity of more consistent first-team football instead of extending his terms at Anfield.
Although the fee remains confidential, the deal is understood to be worth €750,000 (£660,000), with Liverpool also retaining a significant sell-on clause and a buy-back provision.
Kone-Doherty’s switch to Molde arrives nine months after Liverpool took the decision to offload Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid before his contract lapsed in order to receive a fee. The Reds transferred Alexander-Arnold to Los Blancos for £10m on June 1 in 2025, merely 30 days prior to his contract expiring.
Whilst the move to the Norwegian outfit has been completed four months before the youngster’s contract ran down, compared to under a month for Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool have succeeded in obtaining a fee for his services.
Kone-Doherty, who drew attention from multiple clubs, is permitted to make the move owing to Norway’s transfer window being open ahead of their domestic league’s launch next month. Last season, Molde concluded 10th in the 16-team Eliteserien.
The winger, who turns 20 in June, arrived at Liverpool during the summer of 2022 from Derry City and developed through the Academy system, representing the Under-18s and Under-21s whilst also regularly appearing in the UEFA Youth League, FA Youth Cup and EFL Trophy.
The Republic of Ireland Under-21s international was named amongst the substitutes for the Champions League loss at PSV Eindhoven in January 2025 before making his senior Reds bow as a substitute in the FA Cup fourth round defeat at Plymouth Argyle the subsequent month.
Kone-Doherty also featured briefly in the 3-0 League Cup reverse to Crystal Palace at Anfield in October.
Liverpool were comfortable sanctioning the move, given the progression of another young winger, Rio Ngumoha, within the senior squad, whilst also establishing a pathway for Josh Abe, the 15-year-old who has already trained with the first team.
Ben Gannon-Doak, another Academy winger who has sampled first-team action at Liverpool, was transferred to Bournemouth for £25million in the summer.
