The number of Russian military personnel killed in Ukraine has reached 177,433, according to a joint investigation by Mediazona and the BBC Russian service. Since early February, 9,291 names have been added to the verified list, which also includes pictures of the identified soldiers. Journalists compiled these figures using public records, including regional media reports, social media posts from relatives, and official obituaries. They say that the actual death toll is likely significantly higher than the confirmed total.

The confirmed death toll now includes over 57,200 volunteers, 21,400 recruited prisoners, and 17,000 mobilised soldiers, according to the media outlets. A total of 6,414 officers have also been confirmed to have been killed. The Kyiv Independent notes that while Moscow remains silent on its casualty figures, the scale of losses continues to grow as the conflict enters its fourth year.

In a rare statement on his own forces’ losses, President Volodymyr Zelensky told France TV on February 4 that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since the 2022 invasion.

This follows his February 2024 announcement when he stated 31,000 troops had died.

Despite these casualties, Russia‘s territorial gains remain limited. The Ukrainian mapping project DeepState reported that Russian forces occupied 4,336 square kilometres of territory throughout 2025 – representing less than 1% of Ukraine‘s total land area.

The General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces provides a much higher estimate, claiming that as of February 13, Russia has lost approximately 1,250,950 personnel. This figure is understood to combine the killed, wounded, missing, and captured.

The reports come amid ongoing trilateral peace negotiations between Ukraine, Russia, and the US, where the status of the Donbas region remains the primary obstacle to a ceasefire.
