How to prevent hair loss: £1 cupboard staple ‘promotes hair growth’ and ‘stops hair fall’
The quest for thick, luxurious hair can be a constant struggle for many, especially those who have scalp conditions and thinning hair.
From special shampoos to serums, hair masks and supplements, there are many options out there.
One option some experts recommend is fenugreek seeds, also known as methi seeds, which are an annual herb that is often used in cooking as well as medicine.
The seeds are actually native to Southern Europe, India and Northern Africa.
The spice cupboard staple is said to help with certain hair and scalp conditions and is often used to grow thick and shiny hair, according to some experts.
Shweta Shah, celebrity nutritionist and founder at Eatfit24/7, told indianexpress.com said fenugreek is known to “promote hair growth and stop hair fall”.
Hair loss can be caused by DHT (dihydrotestosterone) on hair follicles and genetic factors.
Nutritionist Juhi Kappor said DHT can result in the “gradual miniaturisation of the hair and eventual hair loss”.
Fenugreek seeds can help stimulate blood circulation to hair follicles and contain the steroid saponins.
The steroid in the seeds can interact with DHT and “improve the function of the hair follicle” which makes them “helpful for hair growth”.
Ms Shah also said fenugreek seeds contain other vitamins and minerals including folic acid, vitamin A, vitamin K, vitamin C, potassium, calcium and iron.
Fenugreek seeds are also high in protein and nicotinic acid content which can help “prevent hair fall and dandruff” and treat certain scalp issues like dryness and hair thinning.
Evidence supporting the use of fenugreek seeds for hair growth is quite weak and more evidence is needed to confirm its benefits.
