How to make towels look new by adding 30p ingredient to washing cycle

Maintaining towels properly ensures they stay soft, absorbent, and last longer. Recent data revealed that we should be washing our towels every 3-4 uses.

Dead skin cells, bacteria, and even sweat can accumulate quickly on them. However, after a few months, they can begin to feel stiff.

Materials expert Thomas Bird at Fabric Online has given his tips on how to make your towels feel fresh and soft again.

He has shared a simple trick worth 30p that could make your towels look like new.

Mr Bird said: “The trick is to add vinegar (30p) to your wash cycle as washing towels with vinegar can help remove odours, soften the fabric, and maintain their absorbency.

“Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to washing towels with vinegar.”

He continued: “Gather your towels that need to be washed and separate them based on colour (whites, light colours, dark colours) to prevent colour bleeding.

“Place the towels into the washing machine, ensuring not to overload it.

“It’s important to have enough space for the towels to move around and get cleaned effectively.

“Add your regular laundry detergent according to the instructions on the detergent bottle or box. Use the amount recommended for a load of towels.”

“During the rinse cycle, add white vinegar to the fabric softener dispenser or directly to the rinse cycle. Use about 150ml of white vinegar, depending on the size of your load and the capacity of your washing machine.

“Start the washing machine and let it complete the wash and rinse cycles.

“Transfer the towels to the dryer after the wash cycle is complete. Dry them according to the care instructions on the towels’ labels.

“Vinegar helps to get rid of bad smells, dissolve any detergent residue, and can act as a natural fabric softener. It’s safe to use and won’t leave a lingering vinegar smell on your towels after they’re dried.”
