Home improvement tops New Year’s resolutions for Brits in 2025, survey

Home improvement is set to top the list of New Year’s resolutions for Brits in 2025, as per recent research. A survey of 2,000 adults revealed that 39% of all goals for the upcoming year are related to DIY, surpassing career progression.

Other property-related objectives include decorating, installing new fixtures and adding accessories to homes.

James Holmear from Redrow, who commissioned the study, commented: “Christmas is fast followed by New Year’s resolutions and during this period we’re often reflecting on what ours will be.”

He added: “It’s been interesting to see how home improvements are very much in people’s minds as they look to adjust and better where they live.”

The research also showed that home improvement has been a popular topic of conversation this year, with respondents spending an average of 24 minutes per week discussing it.

Other common resolutions include saving money, being mindful of spending, and focusing on health and personal appearance.

As the New Year approaches, deep cleaning, organising the home, and tackling postponed tasks are high on the agenda. According to the data, one in 10 are even planning a redecoration project.

A significant 25% have admitted that the thought of hosting Christmas has led them to contemplate upsizing their homes in 2025. Furthermore, a third (33%) would consider relocating if it meant substantial savings on their energy bills.

James Holmear from Redrow commented: “Certain moments can trigger the thought of a house move, and seemingly Christmas does that for many.

“It’s a cold time of year and people are spending more time in their property than they typically do, which can highlight things like energy efficiency. And if you live in an older home that can be cold and riddled with historic issues, a new build property would no doubt feel quite appealing as well as cost-effective in the long run.”
