HMRC gives update on when pensioners due tax refund cheque | Personal Finance | Finance


HMRC has explained when cash cheques will go out to pensioners who are owed tax refunds.

A pensioner who is among those owed a payment contacted the tax authority over X to ask for an update on their refund.

They said: “I took a small pot pension in February and as I don’t have any other income should get my tax back and wondered in what timescale this might be.

“I cashed a small pot pension a few years ago and think I got a letter at the end of June telling me what refund I’d get.”

A member of the customer support team replied to say: “We started working through everyone’s records earlier this month.

“We aim to complete by November, you’ll get a notification from us when we do check your record, and you’ll be able to claim a refund here.”

They included a link to this webpage with information about how to set up a personal tax account.

The person then said they had tried to set up an online account but had been unable to do so.

They explained: “I tried to set up a Government Gateway ID password sometime ago but I couldn’t prove my ID even with the credit firm so had to give up was going around in circles.

“I presume once my records have been checked I’ll be notified and sent a cheque so will be happy with that.”

The representative confirmed that “Yes, we can still send a cheque to you”.

People planning for their retirement may also want to check how much state pension they are on track to receive.

A person typically needs 35 years of National Insurance contributions to get the full new state pension, of £221.20 a week.
