A fresh streaming release featuring Priyanka Chopra (Heads of State) and Karl Urban (The Boys) is being praised as the finest pirate film in years.

Since the enormous triumph of the Pirates of the Caribbean series, cinema enthusiasts have been desperate for more high-seas adventures for nearly a decade following the most recent entry, Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Whilst Disney is apparently still developing the highly anticipated reboot, Prime Video has finally answered viewers’ calls for additional swashbuckling escapades on screen.

The Bluff casts Chopra as 19th Century buccaneer Ercell ‘Bloody Mary’ Bodden, who has abandoned her maritime existence to establish herself on the picturesque Cayman Brac, where she’s anticipating her husband TH’s (portrayed by Ismael Cruz Córdova) homecoming.

Unknown to her, TH has been captured by the ruthless Captain Connor (Karl Urban), who harbours a profound, personal vendetta against Ercell, his former apprentice, reports the Mirror.

As Connor’s crew of buccaneers launches a violent assault on Ercell’s island, featuring Star Wars icon Temuera Morrison as Lee, his formidable right-hand man, she must awaken her latent pirate abilities one final time to defend her territory and be reunited with her missing husband.

What unfolds is a thrilling and frequently savage succession of sword duels, stunts and traps that action cinema devotees will relish, directed by Frank E. Flowers with Avengers helmers, the Russo brothers, contributing their expertise as producers.

The new film was released today (Wednesday, 25th February) on Prime Video and has already garnered positive reviews from fans and critics alike, with many emphasising the “grisly” action and Chopra’s powerful lead performance.

“There’s cinematic swoop to the movie that you might not expect in a straight-to-streaming swashbuckler, and you feel the grisliness as she drags herself along the ground in blood-splattered clothes like so many final girls of gory slashers before her,” observed The Guardian.

Original Cin commented: “The swordplay, epic battles and the physicality of Jonas, Urban and Morrison is epic. What is really exciting is the planning that goes into Ercell’s protection of her family as she sets up defences, traps, and cunning stratagems.”

JoBlo’s Movie Network concurred: “This movie takes the conceits and storyline we have seen in films before and gives them a nice edge that keeps you glued to the screen to the very end.”

Screen Rant lauded The Bluff as a “ninety-minute showcase for extremely tense, bloody fight choreography”, whilst Mark Reviews Movies noted it feels “charmingly old-fashioned, with its swashbuckling action, yet distinctly modern, with its bloody and occasionally grisly violence.”

Further praise came from Letterboxd where one user posted: “kinda like die hard on an island and make it pirate-y. the single location is used pretty effectively. the action is great. everyone’s performances are quite fantastic.”

Another glowing review stated: “This is so violent and fun that you’ll forgive the occasional visual reminder that it’s a streaming movie; lots of well-shot action and shockingly nasty moments throughout! And it’s mercifully short!”

Ensure you join the buzz early as The Bluff may have just raised the standard for action films this year.

The Bluff is available to stream on Prime Video.
