Grease-stained clothes come ‘up like new’ with £1 holy grail

Lifting grease stains from our clothes is notoriously difficult – often resulting in our precious garments getting lobbed into the bin in a fit of anger.

But if your favourite top has been victim to a late night pizza spill or spag bol nightmare – fear not, as there is a ‘genius’ hack Brits can’t stop raving about. And no, it’s not vinegar or bleach.

You don’t need to fork out for a professional dry clean, or pick up any fancy stain removers. In fact, this trick will only set you back £1, if you don’t already have the holy grail product lying around in your kitchen.

Taking to TikTok, cleaning expert Laura de Barra, urged viewers not to throw away their grease-stained clothes and to tackle the issue with a humble staple.

“This works even if you’ve washed the garment already,” she said in a recent video. “So all you want to do is get some regular washing up liquid and rub it into the stain.”

After massaging the product into the affected area, Laura simply adds the garment into the washing machine and pops on a standard cycle.

“Here she is as good as new,” the cleaning ace said, showing off the transformed jumper. “If the stain has been on there a long time, you may need to do this twice – but it will come out.

“Also, air dry [the clothes] don’t use heat – as some food grease stains may have dye in them.”

Hundreds of viewers flocked to the comments section to hail the hack, with many pledging to try it out themselves.”Tried this today and it worked a treat,” one user wrote.

Another impressed viewer agreed, commenting: “I do this all the time – it’s criminal how well it works,” while a third added: “I was spending a fortune on stain removers until I realised how good Fairy Liquid was at getting stains out.”

If you’re running low on the good stuff, you can pick up a bottle of Fairy Washing Up Liquid from your nearest supermarket or general store. Sainsbury’s is currently selling a 320ml bottle for £1.
