Gardeners must do one task now to have lush lawn by spring
It’s no secret that the winter months can cause havoc with our gardens, but you don’t have to let the harsh weather ruin them.
The wind, rain and frost aren’t anyone’s best friend, but that doesn’t mean you have to put up with a dreary looking garden come Spring. In fact, if you do one thing now you could aid your lawn in many ways.
Avid gardener Ish, known as gardening.with.ish on TikTok, is known for sharing handy tips online, and his latest is great for anyone looking to inject some love into their lawn.
He said, as the weather has still been mild lately, his lawn has been able to continue growing. But, he recently decided to give his grass the final mow of the season before the cooler temperatures start setting in.
When it comes to mowing in December, there are a few tips you need to follow though. According to Ish, you need to raise the blades slightly higher than normal to avoid causing any damage, and you also need to ensure there isn’t any frost around either.
Ish also said it’s essential to never mow a lawn when it’s wet and, once complete, you should collect as many of the clippings as possible. If you leave too much hanging around, it’ll become mushy, messy and will also compact the soil.
He explained: “Today in the garden I’m giving the lawn its final mow, and it’s a great time to do it because, as the temperatures start to plummet, this grass will remain dormant until Spring.
“So, I can keep looking at the same length lawn all throughout winter until Spring. Another good reason that I’m mowing it as well is because I’ve got these leaves here and, quite frankly, I don’t want to bend down and get them, so I’ll let the lawn mower collect them.”
Since the video was shared it’d been viewed dozens of times, and people were quick to comment too. It looks like everyone has different methods when it comes to their final mow of the season.
One person said: “I gave the lawn a final mow at the start of November, then mid-November and then probably again this weekend. It’s still growing.”
Another wrote: “The grass is so wet where I am.” A third replied: “I always thought the last mow was November.”
Ish replied explaining this is usually the case but, this year, the weather hasn’t been cold enough, which has meant people can hang on a little longer. In the UK, the last cut of the year usually takes place in October or November.
But, it should really be done when the grass stops growing, and no longer needs to be cut. This is something that can vary, as it all depends on the climate and your location.
Throughout autumn, you should graudally reduce how often you mow. Always pay attention to the weather before you complete the task too.
