England player ratings vs Slovenia: Harry Kane poor in goalless draw | Football | Sport

England moved into the last 16 of Euro 2024 as group winners – but Gareth Southgate’s men were once again jeered off the pitch as they drew 0-0 with Slovenia.

The Three Lions hardly mustered a shot in anger despite dominating the game and many of the 25,000 fans who had produced a non-stop wall of sound during the game made their angry feelings clear at the final whistle.

England will now move on to Gelsenkirchen on Sunday after Denmark and Serbia also fought out a goalless draw – but there will have to be a huge improvement if they are to go further in the tournament.

Southgate and his players thanked their travelling fans before making their way off the pitch. At the other end the delighted Slovenians celebrated the point that clinched third place and will also take them through to the knock-out stages.

Express Sport rates and slates the England players…

PICKFORD – 6

Equalled the England record of 22nd successive tournament starts also held by John Stones and Ashley Cole. This was one of the quieter evenings of his international career.

WALKER – 7

Needed to give Saka more of the ball after Janza was booked early on for a foul on the winger. Tireless in his determination to get up and down the flanks despite the boiling temperatures.

STONES – 6

An error-strewn start to the game for the Man City defender winning his 75th cap but gradually settled down to keep the Slovenian attackers in a tight grip.

GUEHI – 7

Didn’t allow his head to drop after a dodgy early pass. England’s most consistent performer during the group stages was booked late on but another solid display from the Palace man.

TRIPPIER – 6

One terrific first-half cross that should have brought a goal. Booked for a high challenge in the 17th minute and did well to stay balanced on the disciplinary tightrope.

GALLAGHER – 5

The Chelsea workhorse did what he was brought into the team to do. But central midfielders need something more subtle than hard running at major international tournaments. Subbed at half-time.

RICE – 7

Really stepped up a gear to drive England forward in the second half like he does for Arsenal. Always available for a pass, didn’t waste the ball and flashed a second-half effort just wide.

SAKA – 6

Had his marker on toast on the occasions England got him on the ball. Another player who really grew into the game as England started to dominate before being subbed off with 20 minutes to go.

BELLINGHAM – 6

Clearly ordered to rotate positions with Foden but the ploy only worked in flashes. Always tried to get on the front foot and industrious both with and without the ball.

FODEN – 7

Phil Foden’s on fire has been the soundtrack to England’s campaign. The Man City playmaker is still only smouldering but at least he’s found a spark. Booked but edged man of the match.

KANE – 5

Five goals in his previous six starts at the Euros. Only Alan Shearer and Wayne Rooney have scored more goals for England in this tournament. But this was another night of toil and frustration for the skipper.
