Chelsea star Enzo Fernandez calls Mason Mount a ‘coward’ after Man Utd drama | Football | Sport

There was no love lost between Enzo Fernandez and Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount after the Chelsea star branded his ex-team-mate a “coward” following a Premier League classic at Stamford Bridge. The visitors seemed set for a dramatic three points when Mount was introduced into the fray in the 86th minute, with United having come back from 2-0 to lead 3-2.

Supporters of the Blues instantly made their feelings on their former hero clear. Mount was only six years old when he joined the club in 2005 and spent 18 years there before opting to leave for Old Trafford last summer in a £55million deal. He was roundly booed as he stepped onto the field and every subsequent touch was also jeered.

One of Mount’s first involvements was to clash with Fernandez, with the pair briefly going head-to-head before being separated by team-mates. But it was the England international who seemed certain to get the last laugh as United continued to lead deep into injury time, before a memorable finale.

The clock had almost ticked past the 100-minute mark when Cole Palmer converted a penalty to level matters. And then just seconds later, the same player struck again with a deflected shot that sent home fans into raptures.

And amid wild player celebrations, Fernandez wasn’t about to let Mount forget their earlier altercation. At the final whistle he approached him and screamed, per South American reports: “This is Chelsea, coward, coward, coward.”

To Mount’s credit, he refused to be riled by the Argentinian, smiling back before walking away. But having scored his first club goal in the 1-1 draw at Brentford on Saturday, the night represented another low in what has been an injury-plagued campaign for the 25-year-old.

As for Fernandez, it wasn’t the first time his fiery temper has been under the spotlight this season. The World Cup winner was involved in an altercation with a Liverpool supporter after the Carabao Cup final at Wembley in February, which Chelsea lost 1-0.

In video footage that promptly went viral on X, a fan shouted “Enzo” until he got the attention of the 23-year-old. When Fernandez turned around, the man in question then screamed “unlucky lad” before laughing uncontrollably.

Fernandez initially moved towards the seating area in an apparent bid to confront his heckler. However, team-mates behind him then ushered him up the steps to collect his runners-up medal.
