Check wallets for rare 20p coin worth 250 times face value

Ever wondered if you’ve stumbled on a rare coin worth a small fortune?

Well, according to one TikTok user, today could be your lucky day. The social media enthusiast, known as @CoinCollectingWizard, revealed a certain 20p piece could fetch hundreds more than its face value – but there’s a catch.

In a video shared with his 210,400 followers, he explained: “Can you spot the rare 20p coin with no date? This rare 20p coin sells for £50.

“This 20p is known as the undated 20p mule error, considered by many as one of the holy grails of UK change collecting. The undated 20p is always at the top of any coin collector’s wish list.”

He went on to reveal the coin was released in 2008, but an “unknown amount” were struck with the wrong dye, resulting in no date on either side. This, he claimed, was due to a mix-up at the Royal Mint when the Royal Shield of Arms design was introduced.

The Royal Mint confirmed this is the first time in over 300 years where a coin entered circulation without a date. “It makes it extremely sought after by coin collectors,” he concluded. “So always check your change.”

His revelation sparked a flurry of comments from grateful followers, some of whom admitted they owned such a coin. So, do you have a rare coin in your pocket?

There are many ways to look for a rare coin in your wallet.

Firstly, scrutinise the date on the coin – this is one of the simplest ways to determine if a coin is rare. Also, look for any errors, as these can also contribute to its rarity.

However, the most crucial factor is the coin’s mintage, which could indicate its true scarcity. For instance, if there are fewer such coins in circulation, everyone would be vying to get their hands on it.
