Captain America star Chris Evans ‘returning for Marvel’s Avengers Secret Wars’ | Films | Entertainment
Last weekend, Marvel Studios shocked the world at Comic Con when Robert Downey Jr announced his return to the MCU.
Thanks to the Marvel multiverse, instead of playing Iron Man he will be taking on the villainous Doctor Doom, the arch-nemesis of the Fantastic Four.
The 59-year-old, who is being paid an extraordinary amount, will be the Thanos-level baddie in Avengers Doomsday and Avengers Secret Wars.
Interestingly, reliable scooper MyTimeToShineHello correctly predicted “I hear RDJ is officially coming back for Secret Wars” a day before the announcement.
Not only that but they also posted: “I hear Chris Evans is officially back for Secret Wars.” But in what capacity?
Marvel fans went wild when Evans cameoed in Deadpool and Wolverine last weekend. But despite Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth assuming it was Captain America, he turned out to be reprising his Fantastic Four character.
Evans plays Human Torch Johnny Storm in the two Fantastic Four movies produced by 20th Century Fox before he took on Steve Rogers.
After Disney bought Fox, the X-Men and Fantastic Four rights went to Marvel Studios, hence Evans was able to reprise Johnny as a character from another universe to the MCU’s Earth-616.
Now Johnny did perish in Deadpool and Wolverine, but that doesn’t mean the star couldn’t play the variant again in Avengers Secret Wars.
However, we think it’s much more likely the 43-year-old will reprise a variant of Captain America for a big reunion with Downey Jr.
Or even better, why not play both? Heck, even the Tony Stark star could fight against himself with Iron Man vs Doctor Doom.
Avengers Doomsday hits cinemas in May 2026 followed by Avengers Secret Wars in May 2027.
