Bathroom staple cleans dirty white trainers in just 10 minutes

Cleaning white trainers can be a tricky task. Using the wrong products might not make any difference at all, or even worse, damage your favourite pair of runners.

While some cleaning experts recommend popping your stinky trainers in the washing machine for a proper scrub, others say this is a definite no-no.

Sneaker aficionados seeking an effective and inexpensive solution to spruce up their white trainers should heed the advice of a TikTok life hack account for an effortless, affordable and machine-free cleanse.

Real Simple (@realsimple) shared a clip explaining how to use merely three readily available ingredients you likely already have at home to purge your mucky trainers. This economical cleaning concoction utilises one item which cleaning enthusiasts can buy for just 50p from Tesco, potentially saving them hundreds of pounds on new trainers.

In a concise instructional video titled “How to clean white leather shoes with toothpaste” the specialist states that “toothpaste can clean more than just teeth”.

The video recommends if your white leather trainers are marred with stubborn stains, conjure a blend of the following:

  • one tablespoon of white toothpaste.
  • one tablespoon of baking soda (Or bicarbonate of soda as it’s known in the UK).
  • one tablespoon of water.

Blend these components into a paste and using a pristine, old toothbrush, casually scrub the paste on sullied spots and blemishes in a circular motion.

The video clearly exposes the dirt lifting relatively swiftly before being swept away to unveil an appealing pair of shiny, revitalised trainers.

For heavily soiled footwear, let the paste sit for 10 minutes, then scrub using just a little bit of added elbow grease.

Why use toothpaste?

Toothpaste primarily consists of an abrasive compound that aids in removing plaque and stains from teeth.

It is the same property that makes it effective for cleaning white shoes, as it can efficiently eliminate dirt and grime buildup, restoring shoes to their original condition.

Toothpaste can be bought from Tesco for 50p, Sainsbury’s for 55p and Poundland for £1.
