Something malfunctioned within the Kremlin on International Women’s Day – and the globe witnessed four minutes of it before someone pressed delete.

A clip uploaded to the Russian president’s official Telegram account showed Vladimir Putin coming to an abrupt stop during his speech, clutching his throat and coughing for approximately 30 seconds before regaining his composure. It disappeared from the platform without any explanation.

Twenty minutes afterwards a refined replacement surfaced – half the duration, with the stumble completely absent – in which Putin seamlessly commended women’s capacity to “captivate with beauty and charm whilst also showing diligence, determination and resilience.”

In the original footage, Putin can be heard saying: “You know, let me say that again, because my throat is a bit scratchy. I almost started coughing. I’ve been talking a lot today.”

For a leader whose every public outing is meticulously staged to demonstrate strength and authority, the footage signalled an extraordinary fissure in the facade. Inside Russia, the question being raised is not what happened to Putin’s throat – but who permitted the footage to be released?

Pro-Kremlin blogger Lev Vershinin claimed on Telegram that the publication could not have been accidental. He wrote: “Anyone with even a passing understanding of the behind-the-scenes process will confirm that this shouldn’t have been possible. They couldn’t have failed to check before publishing it. In systemic terms, it looks like a revolt.”

Ukrainian journalist Denys Kazansky shared the same view, suggesting insiders had grown weary of maintaining an image that no longer reflected reality. He wrote: “You try to present yourself as a young, strong leader, and then someone leaks a single video and your whole image crumbles,” adding that those around Putin were exhausted by “this ailing, senile old man.”

Here are the top six health concerns that have afflicted Putin in recent times:

1. Limping to meet Trump

The coughing video is far from the first occasion Putin’s physical condition has drawn scrutiny. During a visit to meet Donald Trump, the Russian president was spotted limping noticeably as he descended the stairs of his official Ilyushin Il-96-300PU aircraft – known as the Flying Kremlin – and was forced to pause halfway down to collect himself before continuing.

He received a warm reception on the red carpet, including a pat on the back from Trump.

2. Parkinson’s fears

In April 2022, footage of Putin at a Kremlin ceremony to present a State Prize to filmmaker Nikita Mikhalkov showed him repeatedly twisting his feet, shaking his legs and swaying back and forth.

Professor Angus Dalgleish of St George’s, University of London, told the Mirror that these movements were classic symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. “Tremors would be consistent with Parkinson’s, and certainly the tremors he has in his hands are all consistent with the disease,” he said.

“I would put my money on the fact that he’s got Parkinson’s.”

3. CIA rules out cancer.

Those who speculated in 2022 that Putin was undergoing chemotherapy were contradicted by an unlikely source – the CIA itself. Director William Burns stated there was no evidence of cancer, joking that Putin appeared “too healthy.”

5. Bulging veins

In November 2025, Putin’s hands drew attention during a public appearance in Russia, with large swollen veins visible on the back of one hand. Ukrainian media personality Dmytro Gordon commented: “There’s something wrong with Putin’s hands. Apart from the fact that he’s covered in blood up to the elbows, his veins are bulging too.”

6. Mini stroke claims

Last March, video of Putin shaking “uncontrollably” during a meeting with Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko sparked allegations he had suffered a mini stroke. Former Kremlin speechwriter Abbas Gallyamov, who served under Putin during his initial two presidential terms, suggested he seemed to be displaying “the consequences of a mini-stroke.”
