NATO country scrambles warplanes as Putin unleashes deadly bombing – two children dead | World | News

At least six people, including two children, have been killed in a brutal strike in Ukraine. The Russian attack on Kharkiv was so severe that one NATO country was left scrambling warplanes to protect its skies.

Vladimir Putin launched the deadly missile and drone attack last night (March 6), and it has been confirmed that six people were buried under the rubble of one building that was hit. The region’s governor, Oleg Sinegubov, said the body of a 13-year-old girl was retrieved from the ruins, while a young boy was also feared dead. Meanwhile, Volodymyr Zelensky warned, “there may still be people trapped under the rubble”.

As reported by The Sun, Poland was left scrambling fighter jets due to the scale of the strike. They deployed jets to patrol the skies near the border with Ukraine.

Warsaw military headquarters said: “The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces has activated the necessary forces and resources at its disposal.

“Ground-based air defence and radar reconnaissance systems have reached the highest level of readiness.

“These actions are preventative in nature and are aimed at securing and protecting airspace, particularly in areas adjacent to the threatened areas.”

The strike on Kharkiv also destroyed the entrance and damaged the upper floors of a neighbouring building. As well as the six confirmed deaths, more than 15 people were injured in the attack.

Officials confirmed that 19 residential buildings were struck across the city, as well as electricity distribution lines, commercial premises and cars. Meanwhile, the Dnister hydroelectric power station, located in western Ukraine, was also reportedly hit by Russian strikes last night.

Mr Zelensky said on Telegram: “There should be a response from partners to these savage strikes against life. Russia ⁠has not abandoned its ⁠attempts to destroy Ukraine’s residential and critical infrastructure, and therefore support should ‌continue.”

He added: “Russia launched 29 missiles, nearly half of which are ballistic, and 480 drones, most of which are Shahed [Iranian-origin] drones, against Ukraine. They have targeted energy facilities in Kyiv, Khmelnytskyi, and Chernivtsi regions, as well as the railway in Zhytomyr region.

“Damage has been reported in Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Vinnytsia, Odesa, Poltava, Sumy, and Cherkasy regions. Relevant services are working everywhere as needed.”
