Last year, Dubai was recognised as amongst the world’s safest cities, drawing thousands of Britons who relocated there not merely for holidays, but to establish permanent residence.

However, fast forward to the present day, and the city now finds itself caught up in the Middle East conflict. Drones and missiles have descended upon the United Arab Emirates metropolis, targeting luxury hotels and striking airports.

For British holidaymakers seeking Dubai’s sunshine without the evident risks, travel expert Laura Carden-Lovell of Transfer Travel has identified five alternative destinations.

Speaking exclusively to us, Laura suggested four locations from around the globe – with two surprisingly close to home.

Laura said of Agadir: “It’s perfect for travellers who want to get the winter sun without the long haul flight. I think it’s just under four hours from the UK.

“You still get the golden beaches, warm temperatures and relaxed seaside atmosphere. The culture over there is amazing, very colourful, very exotic, but incredibly accessible and affordable.”

Flights to Agadir from London cost less than £100 with a flight time of under four hours.

Describing La Palma as a “hidden gem”, Laura added that it was “a bit quieter and greener but still has volcanic landscapes”. She added: “You can stargaze, perfect for travellers who still want warmth and taking in nature.

“You can hike through the national parks, explore the charming towns and the you’ve got some natural pools as well you can swim in. Sunshine without the crowds.”

There are no direct flights to La Palma, instead Brits have to fly to Tenerife before getting an internal flight.

Portugal’s Madeira archipelago presents another viable choice. She said: “It’s not mainland Portugal but it’s still good for those who want year round weather so it’s a good one.

“They’ve got eternal springs over there and dramatic cliffs. Hikes in the morning and then if you want to enjoy sea view dining.”

Direct flights to Madeira are less than £100 and take 3 hours 55 minutes from London.

For those prepared to venture slightly further from British shores, Laura recommended Antigua should remain firmly on travellers’ radar for its “beaches” and “gorgeous turquoise water”.

She expanded: “You can go sailing, snorkelling. I think they’ve also have some carnivals as well. That’s a perfect for travellers who really want the warm waters and calm weather. It’s got a lot of character and culture.”

Flights to Antigua take over eight hours from London and cost around £500.
