An inquest into her death has ruled the official cause to be drowning after a dingo attack.

A spokesperson for the Coroners Court of Queensland said Piper died “as a result of drowning in the setting of multiple injuries, due to, or as a consequence of a dingo attack.”

No further information could be provided as an investigation into Piper’s death is ongoing.

The state’s Department of Environment, Tourism, Science, and Innovation (DETSI) warns about knowing how to be dingo-safe on K’gari.

“Dingoes are pack hunters. They are apex predators in the island’s ecosystem and need to be treated with respect and safety in mind”

“They should never be confused with domestic pets and do not obey commands from people.”

Piper’s father, Todd James, said he will cherish memories of her “infectious laugh and her kind spirit”.

“Our hearts are shattered as we share the tragic loss of our beautiful daughter, Piper. I admired her strength and determination to go after her dreams.”

Her mother, Angela James, said in an interview with media in the Canadian province of British Columbia, that her daughter had been “having the trip of her life.”

Angela described her daughter as “adventurous.”

“She loved motocross. She loved camping, she loved swimming, and she loved surfing. She wanted to learn to surf,” Angela said.
