Tottenham suffered a 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Thursday night, with the match turning on Micky van de Ven’s red card, and the results leaves Spurs in serious danger of relegation. Just five minutes after Ismaila Sarr had a goal controversially ruled out, Spurs took the lead when Dominic Solanke hammered into the net from close range. Yet everything soon went disastrously wrong.

Captain for the evening Van de Ven hauled back Sarr as he raced into the box, receiving a red card and handing Palace a penalty which Sarr converted. Jorgen Strand Larsen then latched onto Adam Wharton’s pabacko score and Wharton once more sliced Spurs apart with a ball over the top that Sarr reached before tucking home. Made an early save from Wharton but went the wrong way for Sarr’s penalty, was nutmegged by Strand Larsen and outpaced to the ball by Sarr before half-time.

Operated on the right of a back three prior to the red card. Miscommunication with Vicario led to Palace’s third goal. Persistently attempted long balls with little success and was visibly frustrated when he was substituted.

Returned to the squad and gave his all. Forced a save from Henderson early in the second half. Was Spurs’ standout defender on the night.

Utter stupidity. Captain for the evening and had a real lapse in judgement that changed everything, tugging back on Sarr after he got ahead of him.

By far Spurs’ best performer on the night. Yet again a teenager had to spur on the team and he manoeuvred past two Palace defenders before delivering a low cross to Solanke to score. Had another opportunity in the second half after dribbling into the box and battled hard, making numerous tackles.

Sent an early shot wide. Received a first-half yellow card for gesturing an imaginary yellow card following a Palace foul. Lost possession leading to the second Palace goal but it was a tricky pass from Tel. Covered a lot of ground in the second half to no avail.

Began in midfield but reverted to defence following the dismissal. Sluggish in responding to some of the late first-half threats.

Made his maiden Spurs start and received a yellow card inside six minutes for a tardy challenge on Munoz that ultimately forced the Palace player off with a shoulder problem. Subsequently substituted after the red card.

Withdrawn alongside Souza and headed straight down the tunnel. Had provided little before his departure.

Appeared to have sparked Spurs into life with his close-range first-half strike. Worked tirelessly and found himself in the box on 66 minutes with a low effort kept out by Henderson.

Drifted inside and had an early attempt saved. Troubled Palace at times but also Sarr with a wayward pass that resulted in Palace’s second goal.

Covered plenty of ground with minimal quality in possession.

Assisted Spurs in maintaining control of the ball at times in the second half. He retains possession better than most.

Entered for the closing 15 minutes or so and flung himself about a bit.

Embarked on a couple of runs that earned fouls but couldn’t conjure any late magic.
