Manchester United were beaten for the first time under Michael Carrick as William Osula’s stoppage-time winner sealed a dramatic victory for ten-man Newcastle. The game burst into life in a crazy ten-minute period at the end of the first half, which started when Bryan Mbeumo missed a golden chance to score from the edge of the six-yard box. Moments later, Jacob Ramsey was controversially sent off after picking up a second yellow card for an apparent dive in the penalty area.
In another dramatic twist before the interval, Newcastle were awarded a spot-kick when Bruno Fernandes was deemed to have fouled Anthony Gordon. The former Everton winger stepped up and stroked his effort down the middle, but Newcastle’s lead didn’t last long with Casemiro heading home to equalise in the ninth minute of first-half additional time. The hosts were the better side for much of the second half and struck late to steal all three points, with Osula bending into the far corner in the 90th minute.

Man Utd player ratings vs Newcastle
Senne Lammens – 6
Took a while until he was properly tested but guessed the wrong way for the penalty. Couldn’t have done much to stop Osula’s brilliant winner.
Struggled to deal with Harvey Barnes at times and didn’t really stand out in possession, either. Not his most convincing display. Booked.
Played a few pinpoint long balls and had a decent game in defence. Nearly scored with a late header that was parried away.
Helped to start attacks from the very back with some line-breaking passes and carried out his defensive duties reasonably well.
Was involved in several physical battles as tempers flared on the pitch. Did okay until he was substituted in the second half. Booked.
Wasn’t particularly effective in stopping Newcastle from making inroads through the middle, but scored a great header.
Struggled throughout, failing to control the midfield battle. Forced a save from Aaron Ramsdale with a speculative effort from range but that was his only positive contribution.

Missed a sitter from close range, inexplicably blazing over the crossbar. Worked hard but didn’t do much to influence the result. Booked.
Was guilty of a silly foul on Gordon to concede the penalty but created the equaliser and was very good in the second half.
Looked lively on the ball and fired some dangerous crosses into the box, but wasn’t able to influence the final outcome.
Made some clever runs to get himself into good areas but was smothered by several defenders every time he was on the ball.
Substitutes
Diogo Dalot – 5
Introduced on the hour mark, replacing Shaw. Didn’t have a great game but wasn’t terrible either.
Came on for the final 30 minutes in place of Casemiro. Looped a header towards goal but it whistled over the crossbar.
Got a run out in the final 15 minutes with Mbeumo coming off. Made a nuisance of himself in the final third but couldn’t score.
Introduced at the same time at Zirkzee, replacing Mainoo. Looked fired up when he came on.
A late addition, replacing Mazraoui. Off the pace in the closing minutes.
