The Office star’s early ‘masterpiece’ everyone forgets now on Netflix | Films | Entertainment
Netflix subscribers seeking a helping of guilty pleasure nostalgia need look no further than this ‘secret masterpiece’ teen comedy that originally hit cinemas in 2004.
The streaming platform added this underappreciated cult classic earlier this month and it’s the ideal way to round off your weekend viewing plans.
Don’t allow the film’s 15 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating to deter you either; regardless of whether you watched it as a teenager, Sleepover is guaranteed to transport you back to the friendship, fashion and hilarity of your youth.
It chronicles a group of teenage girls who are determined to escape their geeky status amongst their secondary school peers by undertaking an all-night adventure that sets them against their popular rivals.

Other notable talents include Evan Peters of American Horror Story fame, plus Jane Lynch and Steve Carell before their breakthrough roles in Glee and The Office.
Despite the film’s poor reviews and box office performance at the time, in the two decades since its release Sleepover has gradually accumulated a dedicated cult following who all insist it’s well worth your time.
One early convert to the film said at the time on IMDb: “BEST MOVIE EVA!!!!!!!!
“That movie was the best movie I have ever seen! It was cute and funny! ! Alexa Vega did a perfect job on acting as Julie! She is the best actress in the universe!! I love her!”

Another viewer described it as “excellent” and continued: “In my opinion, this was a great movie for teens! It was fast paced and funny! The actors in it were great.”
A further admirer enthused: “Sleepover is like a comforting glass of hot chocolate.
“If you are looking for a thought-provoking impassioned award-nominated movie, you are in the WRONG place, but if you are looking for a happy-go-lucky teen movie where everything goes well in the end and life couldn’t get more perfect, Sleepover is quite a viable option.”
Numerous supporters have also awarded the film glowing reviews on Letterboxd, including this five-star assessment: “I absolutely adore this movie. It’s such an underrated iconic y2k gem that needs more recognition!

“This has such a good balance between a girlycom and romcom. The plot is also so fun. I wish my sleepovers were this fun! I seriously suggest you watch this if you like y2k girly movies like mean girls, wild child and aquamarine!”
One viewer reflected: “I watched this movie when I was like 8 and I rewatched it today. They seriously don’t make good movies like this anymore, R.I.P 2000s girly films.”
Whilst another devotee straightforwardly proclaimed: “This is a masterpiece.” Organising a sleepover or viewing party with your mates this weekend? Make certain Sleepover features on your list.
Sleepover is available to stream on Netflix.
