Andrea Medina, 21, collapses in Champions League & rushed to hospital | Football | Sport
Spanish footballer Andrea Medina was rushed to hospital with a brain injury during a Women’s Champions League match on Wednesday night. Atletico Madrid’s clash against Juventus was overshadowed by distressing scenes after the 21-year-old collapsed on the pitch and needed urgent medical attention.
The left-back, who began her senior career at Real Betis before moving to Atletico Madrid in 2022, fell and remained down for a prolonged period following a collision with Juventus star Barbara Bonansea. Following emergency treatment from the club’s medical staff, Medina was carried off on a stretcher and swiftly transported to hospital by ambulance.
English commentator Jacqui Oatley, who was covering the fixture at Centro Deportivo Alcala de Henares on Wednesday, branded the incident as ‘horrendous’ in a social media post.
She wrote on X: «This is horrendous. We’ve just commentated on Atletico Madrid’s @UWCL game v Juventus for Disney+ and young Spanish left back Andrea Medina suddenly went down – she received urgent lengthy treatment before being carried off. We wish her all the very best and hope she’s OK.»
Offering an update on the player’s condition after the match, Atletico Madrid women said in a statement: «Andrea Medina was replaced after suffering a traumatic brain injury.
«The footballer is doing well but has been transferred to a hospital center to undergo additional tests.»
Despite a worrying injury, the match was played to its conclusion, resulting in a 2-1 defeat for Atletico Madrid at the hands of Juventus, who triumphed with goals from Emma Stolen Godo and Bonansea.
This loss pushed Atletico down to 10th place in the Women’s Champions League table, having secured only one victory and suffered two defeats in three matches, while Juventus ascended to eighth position.
