Marc Marquez suffered concussion after headbutting track in crash | Racing | Sport

Marc Marquez will return to the Indonesian MotoGP this weekend with the hope of avoiding a crash like the one that knocked him out of the 2022 race. The Spaniard has produced some incredible racing in the 2025 season, securing his seventh World Championship title with five races to go last weekend.

Marquez won his first MotoGP title since 2019 at the Japan Grand Prix, finishing second behind Italian team-mate Francesco Bagnaia to ensure he is uncatchable in the championship standings. Brother Alex was closest to challenging the 32-year-old, but was full of support as the star sobbed while crossing the finish line. Speaking post-race, a tearful Marquez said: «It’s impossible to even speak, I just want to enjoy the moment, but it’s true that it was difficult, it was super difficult, but now I’m at peace with myself.»

The journey to a seventh World Championship hasn’t been an easy ride for the Spaniard, however, after he won four consecutive titles from 2016 to 2019. In 2020, the racer broke his arm and required multiple surgeries for the injury, which only kick-started a series of bad luck for Marquez.

One such troubling moment was his insane crash at the 2022 Indonesian MotoGP, where he skidded out during warm-ups and ended up flying through the air. Marquez had been rounding a corner during a practice run of the circuit and lost control, flailing aimlessly through the air as his bike also took flight.

Marquez hit the floor with serious force, headbutting the track as his bike spun out behind him. In the video posted by ABC News at the time, the racer can be seen hitting the tarmac with a bang and narrowly avoiding being struck by his own bike as it landed on the track.

Shockingly, Marquez walked away relatively unscathed with just a concussion from the dramatic crash. Afterwards, the racer reassured fans he was physically okay but couldn’t compete due to his concussion.

Writing on Instagram at the time, the Ducati Lenovo driver said: «I’m OK after the big crash I had this morning. For precaution, and to not take any more risks, we decided to not race at the #IndonesianGP. I want to thank all the MotoGP medical team and the Mataram Hospital for the treatment received. Thank you for all your support messages.»

Marquez recovered but retired from the same race in the following two years. Now, the 2025 World Champion will be back to exact some revenge on the circuit that handed him one of the most dramatic crashes in his career.
