Simple home hack will save you money over winter and keep you warm | Personal Finance | Finance

As the winter draws nearer, many Brits will be beginning to worry about energy costs over the colder months.

Each year, people share tips on how they keep their house warm while trying not to use the heating too much.

From a simple hot water bottle to other DIY ideas, there are plenty of ways to get creative when it comes to staying warm over winter.

One mum took to Mumsnet to share her tips and get advice from others. She said she saved a large amount of money after using these heating ideas rather than spending £15,000 on new double glazed windows, reports The Sun.

The anonymous mum wrote: “We live in an Edwardian house, large rooms with high ceilings and it’s very expensive to heat in the winter. Last year with escalating costs we used a lot of heated throws and tried to stay in one room as much as possible but it was pretty miserable.

“It’s starting to get colder and I’m thinking about lower cost options to make things more comfortable this year without our bills going through the roof.

“We looked at replacing our single glazed windows last year and it was going to cost £15,000 so we didn’t go ahead.”

One suggestion she was given was to bleed the radiators to ensure they are giving out maximum heat.

Another commenter said draft excluders can be purchased for a reasonably low cost yet have great results.

Thin curtains could also be making your home colder – thicker ones would help insulate your rooms and can make them warmer.

Also, wooden or tiled floors can make temperatures feel slightly cooler in your rooms. An easy solution is to get a rug which will help insulate your home and is much cheaper than getting carpet.

The suggestions come after the government announced cuts to the Winter Fuel Payment, leaving many worried about whether they’ll be able to afford to heat their homes over winter.
